For pointed pencil shapes, gently push the tip former knob inward and downward to release the tip former.
For rounded pencil shapes, click tip former back in place.

This pencil sharpener is far superior to any others that I have ever tried and considering its features, is very reasonably priced. It can sharpen normal and large pencils and even has a small pokey stick tucked away between the holes to be able to remove that gunky build up of product left behind. I love this sharpener.
